Emily Logan, Chief Commissioner of the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission today received an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws (LLD) from University College Dublin(UCD).
Every year UCD awards honorary degrees to candidates who have attained outstanding distinction in their professional and creative fields including the arts, science, technology and industry. The Academic Council Committee on Honorary Degrees invited Emily Logan to accept the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, in recognition of her outstanding contribution to public life and human rights and equality.
She received her doctorate from the President of the UCD Professor Andrew J Deeks. The citation for the ceremony was delivered by Suzanne Egan, UCD lecturer on International and European Human Rights Law at the School of Law who said;
“Emily Logan is one of Ireland’s foremost champions of human rights whose work in the field has made a concrete difference to the lives of many people in the State.”
“In the space of two short years in the post of Chief Commissioner she has led the Commission in providing advice to government on a number of pieces of draft legislation as well as in achieving a number of key actions and accomplishments on the national and international stage.”
Ms. Egan also acknowledged the contribution the Chief Commissioner has made in support of the academic work done at UCD in the field of human rights having helped to launch the University’s new Centre for Human Rights in December 2015.

Emily Logan is the first Chief Commissioner of the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission appointed by President Michael D Higgins on 31 October 2014.The Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission (IHREC) was set up on 1 November 2014 as an independent public body.
