€400,000 National Programme Calls for Projects that Advance Access to Justice and Rights and Promote the Eradication of Ableism, Ageism, Racism, Sexism, Homophobia and Transphobia
Organisations and groups across Ireland, who work on issues of human rights and equality are being invited to apply to the Human Rights and Equality Grant Scheme 2023, which has been opened today by the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission.
This year’s Grants Scheme will support projects that focus on one of two strands.
- Strand A: Advancing Access to Justice and Rights – projects that promote access to justice and equip individuals to better understand, claim and vindicate their equality and human rights, and
- Strand B: Promoting the eradication of Ableism, Ageism, Racism, Sexism, Homophobia and Transphobia – projects that promote the eradication of ableism, ageism, racism, sexism, homophobia and transphobia through public understanding and state action.
Civil society organisations applying for funding under the Grants Scheme can make an application for either a small grant (of up to €6,000) or a general grant (of up to €20,000) with a total of €400,000 available.
Grants are open to civil society organisations including national or local groups and voluntary organisations, networks, non-governmental organisations, rights holders groups, area-based community groups, communities of interest groups and trade unions. Applications involving a collaborative partnership between two or more organisations are also welcome.
Applicants are expected to bring forward proposals on empowering people and groups who face the greatest barriers to accessing their rights and where the voice and agency of people facing the greatest inequalities are involved. This includes groups protected under the nine grounds of the equality legislation: gender, civil status, family status, age, sexual orientation, disability, race, religion, membership of the Traveller community, as well as people experiencing poverty and socio-economic discrimination or exclusion, including those seeking international protection and migrant communities.
Now in its eighth year, the Grants Scheme has already funded 210 human rights and equality projects across Ireland, including research programmes, training and resource activities, conferences, events and cultural initiatives. From its inception, the Scheme has continued to evolve and grow together with our Grantees, reflecting their needs, their challenges and the important work they do.
The deadline for receipt of applications is Wednesday 26 April 2023 at 3.00pm, strictly.

The Commission will run three online Information Sessions on the 2023-24 Grants Scheme on the 24, 28 and 29 of March 2023.

Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission
The Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission is an independent public body, appointed by the President and directly accountable to the Oireachtas. The Commission has a statutory remit set out under the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission Act (2014) to protect and promote human rights and equality in Ireland, and build a culture of respect for human rights, equality and intercultural understanding in the State.
