Human Rights – Framed By Young People Exhibition Opens

Mr John Shaw, President of the Law Society of Ireland and Dr Maurice Manning, President of the Irish Human Rights Commission officially opened Human Rights – Framed by Young People, an exhibition of Human Rights Posters by Civil, Social and Political Education (CSPE) students (12-16 years), to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Schools from Dublin, Westmeath, Galway and Cork submitted 40 human rights related posters drawing inspiration from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Dr Manning said "these images and messages reflect the range of human rights in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights including the right to education, to health, to adequate income, to freedom of expression, and to freedom from discrimination. They reflect the importance of human rights in tackling discrimination and creating a just and fair society and reflect the concerns of these young people about human rights issues in Ireland and abroad."

Dr Manning continued "Civil, Social and Political Education makes an important contribution to increasing awareness and understanding of human rights as evidenced by the human rights posters on display. However, building a culture of human rights in Ireland requires that human rights are incorporated not only in the curriculum but in the whole approach to and delivery of education. The IHRC hopes to increase its work in the area of human rights education in the coming years in order to promote the mainstreaming of human rights in education in Ireland."

The exhibition is a joint initiative of the Irish Human Rights Commission and the Law Society of Ireland to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights. The week-long exhibition will be accompanied by a variety of human rights related activities such as workshops which people attending the exhibition can sign up to. A full programme of events is available from Irish Human Rights Commission and the Law Society of Ireland.
