Human Rights Training in Sierra Leone

As part of the NHRI Capacity Building Project Funded by Irish Aid, the Project Lead organised a trip to Sierra Leone to deliver training on Research and Report Writing to the Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone (HRCSL).  The trip was very successful, with a number of useful meetings held with both staff of the Commission and relevant partners such as UNDP, OHCHR, Irish Aid, and the EU in-country delegations. The training was held in Freetown, Sierra Leone from 19th – 20th February 2015 and was facilitated by Andrea Breslin and Hannah Grene.

Training on Research and Report Writing for staff of the Commission was considered a crucial activity in assisting the facilitation of their work and to enhance their capacity to engage strategically with government, business enterprises and other stakeholders on issues related to human rights violations and abuses. It is also hoped that the training will contribute significantly to strengthening the research capacity of the Commission as well as enabling it to provide the required technical support to the District Human Rights Committees and other collaborating partners with whom the Commission works.

The two day training was attended in full by the Chairperson of HRCSL, three Commissioners, the Executive Secretary, and 24 staff of the Commission. UNDP, OHCHR and Irish Aid also made insightful contributions to the Opening and Closing Sessions. The feedback and evaluation from the two day training was very positive from all participants. IHREC would like to express its appreciation to HRCSL for their continued partnership on this project.
