The Equality Authority will hold its Board meeting in Sligo on Thursday 22 February as part of Sligo Equality Week. “ We are delighted to be visiting Sligo as part of a series of events to mark equality issues from February 19-24” said Niall Crowley, CEO Equality Authority. “We are building on our commitment to ensure the equality agenda has a national and regional impact, and the Board has already met in Cork and Galway. The Sligo event is unique in that a week of activities is planned to focus attention on a wide range of equality issues whether through equal status or in employment equality” continued Mr Crowley.
Sligo’s Mayor Alderman Sean Mac Manus will officiate at the Equality Authority’s early morning event with local employers as detailed below. “We have utilised the opportunity to visit Sligo by including employer and equality interests from neighbouring Donegal and Leitrim” added Mr Crowley. Brian Merriman, Head of Communications, Equality Authority will address a public meeting presenting the most recent developments in equality and a question and answer session for all citizens from Sligo and the surrounding areas – Sligo Education Centre, Sligo I.T. 7.00 pm – 9.00 pm.

- Alderman Seán McManus will attend a breakfast meeting at 8.00 am hosted by the Equality Authority in the Riverside Hotel.
- Brian Merriman and Eilis Barry, Legal Advisor will brief employers, human resource personnel, solicitors, trainers, management consultants etc., on the provision of the Employment Equality Act, 1998 and the Equal Status Act 2000.

Patrick O’ Leary, Information Officer will host a workshop for Travellers
Since its establishment in October 18th 1999, the Equality Authority has dealt with more than 7,000 enquiries relating to discrimination. The organisation has a statutory responsibility to advise support and represent, where appropriate, members of the public who feel they have been subject to discrimination within employment and the provision of goods and services. The legislation outlaws discrimination on nine distinct grounds, gender, marital status, family status, sexual orientation, religion, age, disability, race, membership of the Traveller Community. The next Equality Authority regional event will be held when the Board meet in Wexford in May 2001.
