Council of Europe marks 60th anniversary of the European Convention on Human Rights

4 November 2010 marked the 60th anniversary of the European Convention on Human Rights signed in Rome.

The Convention has now been ratified by all members of the Council of Europe and will soon be ratified by the European Union. Its jurisprudence affects individuals on a daily basis across all 47 Member States.

Welcoming the 60th anniversary today, IHRC President Maurice Manning stated: "As one of the ten founding member states of the Council of Europe along with Belgium, Denmark, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the United Kingdom, Ireland can be rightly proud of its long history of support for the Convention system. The challenge facing us all now is to make sure the rights guaranteed in the Convention are effective and available for citizens in all Member States."
