Reviewing legislation

We focus on making sure our legislators protect and promote human rights and equality in the State. We closely examine how proposed laws impact human rights and equality. Then, we offer recommendations based on our findings. These observations aim to point out issues lawmakers might overlook. This gives them a chance to make changes before finalising laws.

Legislative reform

We can respond to government consultations reviewing existing laws. We make recommendations to the government on reform of laws to ensure they protect human rights and equality.

Appearing before Oireachtas Committees

We often present to Committees to discuss the impacts of legislation on human rights and equality.

Oireachtas committees can invite individuals or organizations to provide evidence. This can be about topics or draft legislation they are considering. We have spoken before multiple Oireachtas Committees about issues such as Traveller accommodation, Direct Provision, disability rights and redress.

Policy Statements

When the government or relevant groups announce new policies that effect human rights and equality, we can give our feedback. We do this by creating policy statements. These statements include observations and recommendations for changes to address these issues.
