Dr Salome Mbugua is a researcher, gender equality activist, and human rights advocate with over 20 years of experience in civil society. She currently serves as the CEO of AkiDwA – The Migrant Women’s Network Ireland, where she leads on operational management, advocacy, policy development, and governance. In April 2025, she was appointed by the UN Secretary-General as an Independent Eminent Expert on monitoring the implementation of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action.

Her work encompasses the development of education, support, and advocacy programmes, as well as collaborations with various organisations to influence policy and drive systemic change. Guided by a strong commitment to equality and justice, Dr Mbugua has actively engaged with policymakers in Ireland, across Europe, and internationally. She also contributes her expertise through participation in numerous advisory committees, expert groups, and boards.
