Statement

We condemn this assault in the strongest possible terms.

We have repeatedly highlighted the chilling effect attacks on public representatives can have in undermining people’s ability to participate safely in public life. When people withdraw from public life because of threats, intimidation or abuse, our democracy is weakened.

As a society, we need a zero-tolerance approach to this. The Commission wishes Deputy Healy-Rae a swift recovery.”

We have recently published our policy statement on hate highlighting the need for a sustained national response to hate. We have called for a whole-of-government national strategy and action plan on hate, with a designated lead Department, clear accountability mechanisms and independent monitoring. We also recognise the growing problem of attacks and threats against elected representatives and election candidates.
