Jo Edson Ferrie is Professor of Sociology at the University of Glasgow. She is primarily recognised internationally as a methodologist and expert in graduate research teaching. These skills have been applied to human rights realisation, notably in Scotland, over the last 15 years. Jo has been a member of the Scottish Human Rights Commission’s Research Advisory Group, evaluating their National Action Plan in 2019, co-editing a special issue of the International Journal of Human Rights on Scotland’s record in 2018 (to be repeated in 2028), and produced the research work behind their recent spotlight project on Deinstitutionalisation. Jo is a founding member of the Commission’s Human Rights Budget Group. Jo’s extensive work has been captured in recent publications such as Access to Social Justice: Effective Remedies for Social Rights led by Prof. Katie Boyle. Jo is also on the Board, and founding Chair of Making Rights Real, a small but mighty charity that works with communities in Scotland to name and claim rights.
