Statement

The Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission extends its deepest sympathies to the family, friends and loved ones of Yves Sakila, and to the wider Congolese community in Ireland, following his tragic death in Dublin city centre last Friday.

We also wish to extend our concern and best wishes to the man injured during the incident, and to his family at this difficult time.

We recognise the profound shock and distress that this incident has caused, particularly within the Congolese community and wider Black and minority ethnic communities.

It is essential that there is a full, independent and prompt investigation into all of the circumstances surrounding this incident.

The State authorities and oversight bodies responsible for carrying out these investigations must be allowed to do their work thoroughly and impartially, and it is vital that the process commands the confidence and trust of the communities most affected.

IHREC notes statements from both An Garda Síochána and Fiosrú and encourages anyone with information or footage relating to this incident to respond to the appeal for witnesses from An Garda Síochána.

At a time of grief and concern, it is important that public discourse remains measured, respectful and responsible, and that the dignity and rights of all involved are upheld.

While the investigation is ongoing IHREC will make no further comment.
